Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on September 29, October 18 and December 16, 1965.
Bill Evans' 1966 release, WITH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, saw Evans at the height of his playing abilities. After 10 years of recording and performing with both his own trio and with the Miles Davis Sextet, Evans seemed poised to explore new vistas in jazz.
Blending jazz and classical music together with great cogency, Evans and arranger Claus Ogerman balance a variety of musical colors that range from light to dark, minimal to florid. The crisp drumming of Larry Bunker and Grady Tate, and the syncopated rhythms of bassist Chuck Israels, root this set firmly in jazz. However, Evans, known for his nimble touch and textural brilliance, calls on his classical training to infuse the music with 19th century impressionism, notably on pieces such as Gabriel Faure's "Pavane," and Frederic Chopin's "Blue Interlude." In addition, arrangements of Evans' own compositions, "Time Remembered" and "My Bells," prove that Evans himself is a composer of great stature.
