Este título es especialmente interesante para un coleccionista de jazz porque reúne el origen y los primeros años de Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP), el proyecto creado por el productor Norman Granz. La primera actuación se celebró el 2 de julio de 1944 en el Philharmonic Auditorium de Los Ángeles
Más que un grupo estable, JATP era una enorme jam session en directo, en la que Granz reunía a algunos de los mejores músicos de jazz y swing del momento y los hacía improvisar juntos. Entre los participantes de los años 40 encontramos nombres extraordinarios como:

Las grabaciones del concierto inaugural del 2 de julio de 1944 son históricas. Participaron J.J. Johnson, Illinois Jacquet, Jack McVea, Nat King Cole, Les Paul, Red Callender y Lee Young, entre otros. Parte de aquel material apareció posteriormente en los volúmenes 4 y 5 de JATP.
Valor histórico
Muy alto. Para mí, este material pertenece a la biblioteca esencial del jazz de los años 40. No es simplemente otro disco de jazz en directo: documenta el nacimiento de una de las series de conciertos más importantes de la historia del género y el momento de transición entre el swing y el bebop.
