El álbum originalmente estaba destinado a llamarse Think Too Much, pero Mo Ostin, presidente de Warner Bros. Records en ese momento, persuadió a Simon para que lo cambiara a Hearts and Bones. El álbum fue escrito y grabado después de The Concert in Central Park de Simon & Garfunkel en 1981, y la gira mundial de 1982-1983.
Varias canciones destinadas a Think Too Much fueron previsualizadas en la gira, y Art Garfunkel trabajó en algunas de las canciones con Simon en el estudio,con la intención de que el producto final fuera un nuevo álbum de estudio de Simon & Garfunkel. Garfunkel dejó el proyecto y Simon borró todas sus voces y trabajó el material en un álbum en solitario.
