El lanzamiento de Self Portrait coincidió con un periodo en el que Bob Dylan había abandonado las giras a raíz de un accidente de motocicleta que sufrió en julio de 1966.8 Durante su convalecencia, el músico trabajó con The Band en el sótano de «Big Pink», un chalé de Woodstock donde grabó canciones que años después fueron recopiladas por Columbia Records en The Basement Tapes
